Boat Waves: A Shiny Display Font for Editorial Projects

There’s a moment in every editorial project when the right font can transform a layout from ordinary to extraordinary. I recently found myself in that exact situation while redesigning the header for a lifestyle blog focused on coastal living. The challenge was to capture the essence of oceanic serenity with a typeface that felt both modern and inviting. That’s when Boat Waves entered the scene—a display font with a playful yet refined character that seemed perfectly suited for the task.

A Handwritten Display Font with Shine

Boat Waves is a handwritten display font that carries a sense of motion and fluidity. Its all-caps style features shiny lines that catch the eye, making it ideal for headlines, titles, and decorative accents. What stands out about this font is its balance between whimsy and professionalism. It doesn’t scream for attention but instead invites the reader to pause and appreciate the design.

The font has optimized nodes for cutting, which means it performs well in vector-based layouts such as magazine covers or social media graphics. This makes it particularly useful for digital and print projects where precision matters. Whether you’re crafting a cover for a digital magazine or designing a printable planner, Boat Waves adds a touch of elegance without sacrificing clarity.

Editorial Uses and Visual Hierarchy

In my recent project, I used Boat Waves for the main title of the blog’s new header. The result was striking—its rhythmic curves and subtle shine created a visual anchor that guided the reader’s eye effortlessly through the layout. It worked especially well alongside a clean sans-serif font for body copy, reinforcing the contrast between decorative elements and readable text.

For pull quotes in an editorial feature page, Boat Waves added just the right amount of personality. It drew attention without overwhelming the content, making it a great choice for highlighting key insights or memorable lines. In a recipe ebook I once designed, it was perfect for chapter openers and section headings, giving each part of the book a unique identity while maintaining a cohesive design language throughout.

Its versatility extends to other areas too. I’ve seen it work beautifully on newsletter headers, wedding guides, and even course PDFs. The font’s mood is light and approachable, which makes it suitable for content that aims to engage and entertain rather than inform or persuade.

Readability and Practical Considerations

While Boat Waves shines in display roles, it’s important to remember that it may not be the best fit for long-form reading. Body copy, small captions, or dense paragraphs could become difficult to read if set in this font. As a rule of thumb, it’s best reserved for titles, subtitles, pull quotes, and decorative accents where its expressive nature can be fully appreciated.

When using Boat Waves, consider pairing it with a more traditional serif or sans-serif font for body text. This ensures readability while still allowing the display font to make a strong visual statement. For example, combining it with a classic serif like Georgia or a modern sans-serif like Helvetica Neue can create a balanced and professional look.

Before integrating Boat Waves into any publication, it’s essential to check the included styles, alternates, ligatures, weights, and multilingual support. Also, ensure that the font licensing allows for commercial use if your project involves ebooks, templates, printables, or digital downloads.

Creating Mood and Brand Identity

One of the most compelling aspects of Boat Waves is how it contributes to the overall mood of a publication. Its handwritten feel brings warmth and authenticity to a design, which can be especially valuable for brands that want to communicate a sense of community, creativity, or personal connection.

In a coaching workbook I helped design, Boat Waves was used for chapter titles and activity headers. It helped establish a friendly, approachable tone that aligned with the brand’s message. Similarly, in a digital magazine focused on travel, it added a sense of adventure and spontaneity to the editorial layout.

Ultimately, Boat Waves is more than just a font—it’s a tool for storytelling. When used thoughtfully, it can enhance the reader’s experience by creating visual interest, reinforcing brand identity, and supporting the narrative of the content itself.
